RootsMagic has very good support for GEDCOM and the import process creates a detailed log file.
Unfortunately, RootsMagic imports a GEDCOM 5.5.1 document as if it was a GEDCOM 5.5 document. Its log file does not inform the user that the program does not recognize many record types that were introduced in GEDCOM 5.5.1, and that is an oversight.
It's a shame that popular, full-featured programs like RootsMagic do not support all the record types and other changes introduced in GEDCOM 5.5.1. RootsMagic, Inc. has implemented some features specific to GEDCOM 5.5.1, such as the UTF-8 character encoding. If they implemented more of the GEDCOM 5.5.1 specification, that would help to put the final nails in the coffin of GEDCOM 5.5.
