This page describes a set of tests included in version 1.05 of the GEDCOM file assess.ged (download - view). Details change between versions.

Area Summary

People with the surname "Link" assess support for the ALIA or ASSO records.

01-Alias Principal

The GEDCOM 5.5.1 specification defines ALIA as "An indicator to link different record descriptions of a person who may be the same person." Some applications ignore the specification and use it to define an alternate name.

There are three common variations of the ALIA record. This variation follows the GEDCOM 5.5.1 standard to indicate one INDI record may represent the same person as another INDI record.

This test uses two INDI records, 01-Alias Principal (@I191@) and 01-Alias Target (@I192@).

The ALIA record for 01-Alias Principal points to 01-Alias Target. If the target application follows the GEDCOM standard, it will create a link of some kind between 01-Alias Principal and 01-Alias Target.

Test Result Criteria

  1. If a target application creates a link or some other visible association between 01-Alias Principal and 01-Alias Target, set the test result to "Supported".
  2. For any other outcome, set the test result to "Imported Incorrectly" and describe the outcome in the comment.

Letters N and S indicating non-standard 02-Alias Name

The GEDCOM 5.5.1 specification defines ALIA as "An indicator to link different record descriptions of a person who may be the same person." Some applications ignore the specification and use it to define an alternate name.

There are three common variations of the ALIA record. This variation uses an ALIA record to define an alternate name, "John D. Sample". The surname is not delimited.

Test Result Criteria

  1. If a target application imports the non-standard value and uses it to create an alternate name record, set the test result to "Supported".
  2. If a target application imports the value into an attribute or event text field, set the result to "Partially Supported".
  3. If a target application fails to import the value, or imports it in some manner other than as described above, set the test result to "Not Supported (non-standard)".

Non-Standard Content

This test includes one or more records with values that are not valid according to the GEDCOM 5.5.1 specification. The target application may reject or ignore the non-standard value(s) and that is a reasonable outcome.
